Hurricane Ian caused severe shoreline erosion at Manasota Key, Don Pedro, and Stump Pass, displacing hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of sand. The dune system and seawalls were heavily damaged, exposing properties to storm risks. Additional damage affected beach fill, mangrove roots, riprap, pavilions, sidewalks, boat ramps, and docks, many of which need repair or replacement.

Outfall culverts that were replaced or repaired due to hurricane damage are required to have a manatee exclusion grate installed. These grates help prevent manatees from getting stuck in the culvert. There are 37 culvert locations throughout the county that will have these grates installed.
