Project Description
This project includes procuring an engineering firm to design the bridge replacement, followed by contracting with a construction firm to construct the bridge replacement work.
Charlotte County has engaged Kimley-Horn and Associates to design the replacement of the Washington Loop Bridge over Prairie Creek. Originally constructed in 1961, the existing bridge has been subject to overtopping during storm events, resulting in periodic closures. The new bridge will be designed to mitigate these issues by elevating the structure to accommodate greater water volumes and higher flow velocities during flooding events.

Project Activities – June 2026
Kimley-Horn (KHA) has requested the boundary surveys for the parcels along the south side of Washington Loop Road from the Surveyor.
- Roadway – They have set our vertical and horizontal geometry and have started input to the plans production.
- Drainage – KHA is sizing our roadside swales and outfalls.
- Structures – KHA has set the initial bridge layout and will be starting to input it into the plans in the coming weeks.
The team is now moving forward with the 60% design plans, along with permitting activities for the roadway, bridge, and utilities. The 60% design plans are due January 2027.
